Podemos e IU se alían en la mayoría de CCAA, con dudas en La Rioja y separados en Asturias y Aragón.

Podemos and IU have formed coalitions for the May 28 regional elections in nine autonomous communities and are pushing to attempt a merger in La Rioja, which is now the main unknown as to whether a joint list will be formalised before the deadline for presenting coalitions. In Aragón and Asturias, they will likely continue to run separately, as they have since 2015, according to data compiled by Europa Press.

The two main forces in the confederal space have already closed electoral deals in the Valencian community, Madrid, Murcia, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Navarra, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Cantabria, both at an autonomous level and largely at the local level.

They have also forged pacts in regions where there are no autonomous elections and only municipal like Catalonia (under the umbrella of 'commons'), and in the Basque Country (also for the elections in the provinces) which also includes Alianza Verde (the UP ecologist party) and Equo.

Joint candidacies are the general trend in the major municipalities of Galicia and Castilla y León, while the map in Andalusia shows agreements in Cádiz, Huelva, Almería, Córdoba, Málaga, and Seville (in these three with a broad front of forces that already make up the coalition 'Por Andalucía), with the disparate note of Granada and Jaén where the panorama approaches fragmentation.

On the other hand, in some municipal plazas, the confluence is more extensive and even includes Más País, the formation led by Íñigo Errejón, as is the case Ciudad Real, Córdoba, Málaga, or Seville, but not in autonomous-level alliances where Podemos is present.

The tension created by the negotiation of the coalition 'Por Andalucía' in the last regional elections of this community, as well as that related to the Sumar process, have not affected the Podemos and IU confluence for the 28M, as they have strengthened their alliances with positive assessments in both directions.

Thus, the electoral map in the independent left of the PSOE is almost defined with coalitions at the autonomous level, whose lists are mainly headed by the purple party. The main unknown now is La Rioja, which is now the focus of contacts between Podemos and IU to achieve a final attempt at a unitary list, both at the autonomous level and at the municipal level.

Paradoxically, La Rioja was one of the first autonomies where the willingness to converge was announced, but it has not yet been concretized pending the closing of the deadline to register coalitions on 28M at midnight this Friday.

For this region, IU demands that the deputy Henar Moreno head the regional list, defending that this was pre-agreed at the regional level, and the parliamentarian herself has criticized that the national leadership of the purple party is playing "dirty" in the negotiations. However, she assured that they remain open until the deadline for registering coalitions ends and that offers and counter-offers have been exchanged regarding the confluence.

In Aragón it is certain that Podemos and IU will run separately, and the scenario will be one of fragmentation on the left, where in addition Chunta Aragonesista competes. Both formations will also compete in Asturias, where IU has articulated a confluence with Más País while Podemos, which is immersed in a strong internal crisis, reproaches that its offer of unity has not been heeded.

However, the 28M electoral appointment has meant an increase in territorial confluences of Podemos and IU since they have re-edited existing ones and amplified them in Murcia, Navarra, the Canary Islands, and Cantabria.

In Navarre, a unity list has been achieved between Podemos, Izquierda Unida, Batzarre, Alianza Verde, Verdes Equo, and a group of independents, under the 'Contigo Navarra' brand. In Extremadura, the coalition is reissued (under the name Unidas por Extremadura) and will also be the main ballot on the left of the PSOE, as in Cantabria and Castilla-La Mancha.

Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, the attempt at a unitary candidacy failed, leading to an alliance of Podemos, IU, and 'Sí se puede', who will compete electorally with Proyecto Drago, the brand promoted by the former leader of the purple party Alberto Rodríguez, who in turn has an agreement with Verdes Equo.

In Murcia, the two main forces in the confederal space form a candidacy, which will have as its rival to the left of the PSOE, Más Región, the regional brand of Más País, which will go in coalition with Verdes Equo.

The fragmentation of the left will also occur in two relevant locations, such as Madrid, where Unidas Podemos competes for the electorate with Más Madrid, headed by Mónica García. Thus, in the Valencian Community, Compromís, and Podemos and IU will also measure themselves in the progressive space. In the Balearic Islands, there will also be two left-wing candidates to the PSOE, Més per Mallorca and the one made up of the two main parties of Unidas Podemos.

At the municipal level, the trend towards alliances also happens in Castilla y León with pacts in Burgos, León, Ávila, Palencia, Salamanca, and Valladolid (under the brand 'Valladolid takes the floor'), while it has not yet been completed in Soria. In addition, the singular case of Zamora is confirmed, where IU governs the town and will run independently with a list headed by Mayor Francisco Guarido.

Regarding Galicia, Podemos and IU also show a connection in the main urban areas and will run together, for example, in Coruña, Lugo, Orense, and Vigo.

In a tense climate between Podemos and the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, following the launch of her candidacy, the purples will hold a massive rally in Zaragoza this Saturday where Ministers Ione Belarra and Irene Montero will support a large group of Podemos candidates for these elections.

In addition, the formation has demanded the support of Díaz for the candidates of the space for the election campaign on 28M, where they will compete with parties with which Sumar maintains contacts for a broad confluence of the generals.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour stated that her team is studying the cities to go to during the election campaign since she has "hundreds and hundreds of requests to go to 8,000 places," although she regretted that the fractures of the left in some territories do not make things easy for people.
